Schisandra – The Ultimate Adapter

schisandra onlineSchisandra is a berry native to northeastern China that is just beginning to catch attention in the Western world. Often used in Chinese medicine for a variety of health issues, this supplement is also referred to as the five-flavor berry for its sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent flavor.

The list of conditions Schisandra can be taken for is miles long, and internet searches come up with a list of seemingly contradictory abilities. Today the Male Herb Supplement team wants to help you break the information down so you can decide for yourself how it can best help meet your body’s needs – male or female.

How does it work?

Schisandra is an adaptogen.

Adaptogens, for those of you aren’t familiar with the term, is a substance that helps stabilize the physiological processes in our bodies. They also help our bodies maintain homeostasis – that is, keep conditions inside our bodies just right for them to continue working the way they are designed to.

It can be used as a stand-alone, or mixed with other supplements.

What can I use Schisandra for?

As we said before, the list is long and varied. The uses we believe are of most interest to you are in bold.

  • Defense against early aging symptoms
  • Boosting energy levels
  • Stabilizing blood sugar and blood pressure
  • Stimulating the immune system
  • Helps adrenal gland function (including production of sex hormones)

Schisandra can also be used to aid in the treatment of (items of interest in bold):

  • High cholesterol
  • Respiratory issues such as coughing and asthma
  • Insomnia
  • Nerve pain
  • (in men) Erectile dysfunction (ED) problems
  • (in women) PMS
  • Sweating issues such as night sweats and excessive sweating
  • Exhaustion/Irritability
  • Depression
  • Memory loss
  • And more…

That’s a long list! Is there a time when I shouldn’t use Schisandra?

Great question! The answer is yes. Like with many substances (supplements/medicines/etc), there are situations where using Schisandra does more harm than good.

Because of its abilities as a stimulant, there are concerns that Schisandra could trigger issues for those dealing with epilepsy or intracranial pressure problems. For pregnant women, it is possible that it could cause contractions in the uterine walls that would trigger a miscarriage.

We also caution those with issues aggravated by stomach acids, as Schisandra does increase the amount of stomach acids produced.
